Why devotees come here
Adi Jagannatha Perumal Temple stands in Thirupullani village, about 10 km from Ramanathapuram town. It is dedicated to Vishnu, worshipped here as Adi Jagannatha, and is one of the 108 Divya Desams. Its five-tiered gateway tower faces east.
Adi Jagannatha Perumal Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desam Vishnu temples named in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham. Here Vishnu is worshipped as Adi Jagannatha, and his consort Lakshmi as Padmasini. Legend says Rama did penance lying on Kusa grass to seek the way to Lanka, and the place is named Dharbasayanam after that act. Another legend says Dasharatha's payasam, shared among his three wives, gave birth to Rama, Lakshmana, Bharatha and Shatrughna.
The temple is believed to have been built in the late 8th century CE. It is also believed to have started in the Medieval Chola period, along with many temples dedicated to Rama. Chola king Parantaka I adopted the name Sangrama Raghava following his conquest of Sri Lanka.
The temple is built in the Cholan style of architecture. Its five-tiered rajagopuram, the gateway tower, faces east. Padmasini has a separate shrine, and a shrine for Dharbasayana Ramar shows Rama in a reclining posture.
