Shri Ambadevi Temple stands in the heart of Amravati city, at Gandhi Square. The city is said to be named for this ancient temple, though that is a legend rather than settled history. Navaratri, which falls just before Dasara, brings nine days of cultural and religious programmes, and a big mela draws people from all walks of life.
The temple is very old, and it is mentioned in the old gazetteers. Local people and the temple authorities celebrate Navaratri together, with gaiety and harmony. The mela is visited with the same enthusiasm by people from every walk of life, whatever their background.
Amravati sits about 340 m above sea level. It is the main centre of West Vidarbha and lies on the Mumbai-Calcutta highway. Amravati lies 156 km west of Nagpur and is the administrative centre of Amravati district.
