The temple and its ponds are well known, and people come here to take a holy dip in the pond.
The site is in the Muhammadpur development block of Azamgarh district, about 300 km east of Lucknow. According to mythological books, the site has been known since the time of the Mahabharata. The lake here was once a havan kund, a fire altar where the yagya was performed. A belief holds that a three-storey temple, about 1000 years old, lies under the temple ground. When the temple was dug, ancient war equipment and broken idols were reportedly found.
