Why devotees come here
The BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir stands opposite Dadar station in Mumbai, in a densely populated residential and shopping area. Pramukh Swami Maharaj opened the mandir in December 1983, and its three spires are built of pink stone.
The Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, known as BAPS, was formed in 1905 by Shastriji Maharaj. This mandir stands in Dadar, a densely populated residential and shopping neighbourhood in Mumbai. Dadar is often called Mumbai's first planned suburb, and its Dadar-Matunga-Wadala-Sion scheme of 1899-1900 was the first planned scheme in the city. Its station is served by the Western and Central lines of the suburban railway.
Yogiji Maharaj set up a small building as a Hari Mandir in 1961, and a prediction said a mandir would be built in the centre of the city. Pramukh Swami Maharaj laid the foundation stone. He opened the mandir in December 1983. Mahant Swami Maharaj became known by that name after he was appointed head of the Mumbai mandir.
The mandir is built of pink stone and has three spires. Its carvings are intricate and sculpted in true Indian style, and the first shrine is of Harikrishna Maharaj, Krishna and Radha.
