Why devotees come here
Bhawar Nath Temple stands on the western edge of Azamgarh city in Uttar Pradesh. Shiva is worshipped here as Baba Bhawar Nath, and local belief holds that prayer here brings relief from trouble. Mahashivaratri and the month of Sawan bring many devotees.
Devotees in Azamgarh worship Shiva here as Baba Bhawar Nath, and the worship is considered important for the local people. Local belief holds that prayer at this temple frees devotees from their troubles. The name is tied to an old saint, Bhannathnath, who is said to have fed his cow on this spot. Legend says a Shiva lingam was established in his time.
The foundation of the temple was laid on 4 October 1951. Construction was completed on 13 December 1958, after seven years of work.
Mahashivaratri is the big fair here, and by tradition the marriage of Shiva is observed on that day. Devotees also come in large numbers through the month of Sawan, when many perform jalabhishek at the shrine. The temple stands on the western end of Azamgarh city.
