Raja Ajber Sen founded the present town of Mandi around the Bhootnath Temple. Before that, the place was known as Mandav Nagar. Mandi is a city and municipal corporation in Mandi district, 145 km north of Shimla, the state capital. It lies in the north-west Himalayas, on the banks of the Beas River, where the Suketi Khad stream joins it.
Every year, Mandi hosts the Shivaratri Fair, an international fair that runs for seven days in February or March. The celebration is said to have started to mark the founding of present-day Mandi. The district government's tourism section lists the Mandi Shivratri festival.
