Legend says a group of tribals who were fleeing prayed to the hill for help. The spirit of Gangamma came down from the hillock, sheltered the tribals and crushed the Nawab's army.
The Boya and Pala Ekari communities built the temple after their victory over the Nawab's troops. The Andhra Pradesh Endowments Department took over the temple in 1990. The Navaratri festival is held once a year over nine days, and it brings lakhs of people from across India, particularly the south.
