Why devotees come here
Kataka Chandi Mandir is dedicated to the Hindu deity Chandi. It stands near the banks of the Mahanadi river in Cuttack. Residents hold Chandi as the living deity, and she is the city's principal deity.
Maa Kataka Chandi is the deity that Cuttack holds in high regard. Residents treat her as the living deity, and she is the city's principal deity. Hundreds of pilgrims visit the temple every day, and devotees come to it through the year.
Legend says the idol lay hidden under the ground, at the spot where the temple now stands. The priest Hansa Panda dreamt that Devi Chandi asked him to take her out of the land. It is said that around forty bullock carts carrying red sindur came out first during the digging, followed by the idol of Maa Chandi. The temple was built on the same land.
It is believed that Chandi was the family deity of the Gajapati rulers in the medieval era. It is also believed that, because of Islamic invasions, the idol was buried and the kings moved to Puri. Dashahara and Kali Puja are two prominent festivals observed here. During Pana Sankranti, the Odia New Year, the idol is adorned with golden ornaments.
