Why devotees come here
The Devaadi Raja Perumal temple stands in Therazhundur village, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu. Its five-tiered gateway tower rises above concentric granite walls.
Devaadi Raja Perumal is one of the 108 Divya Desams, shrines dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped here with his consort Lakshmi as Sengamalavalli Thayar. Thirumangai Azhwar sang 45 pasurams, Tamil hymns, in praise of the deity here. Legend says Krishna settled in this place and appeared for the cattle. That is why the presiding deity is called Amaruviappan, the one flanked by cattle.
The original structure is recorded as built by Karikala Chola in the 1st century CE, and the Cholas added to it in the 11th century. A group called the Gosakha Bhaktha Sabha began steps for a complete renovation, with the approval of the HR&CE Department of the Tamil Nadu government.
The temple has a five-tiered rajagopuram, the gateway tower that rises above its granite walls. A granite wall surrounds the temple and encloses all its shrines. The central shrine houses Devadi raja Perumal in standing posture, and the festival deity Amaruviappan is housed under the Garuda Vimanam.
