Dunagiri is counted among the most ancient Shakti temples of Kumaon, and the Shakti here is known locally as Dunagiri Devi. The Manas khand of the Skanda Purana mentions Dunagiri and gives it the title Brahm-parvat, or Divine Mountain. Sage Garga is said to have had his ashram here, and the river Gagas is believed to be named after him. Local tradition says the Pandavas took shelter at Dunagiri during their exile.
Dunagiri is also known as a birthplace of modern Kriya Yoga. Lahiri Mahasaya was initiated into Kriya Yoga here by Mahavatar Babaji. The Mahavatar Babaji cave is said to be where Lahiri Mahasaya received his teachings directly from him.
