Why devotees come here
Edaganathar temple at Thiruvedagam, near Madurai, is a Shiva temple on the bank of the Vaigai river. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the Tevaram. Legend says Sambandar's palm-leaf verses settled here, and that gave the village its name.
Legend says Sambandar's verses, written on a palm leaf, went against the current of the Vaigai river and settled here. Sambandar was pleased and named the place Edu Senranai Tharum Edagam, which became Thiruvedagam. Shiva is worshipped here as Edaganathar, in the form of the lingam, with his consort Parvati as Visalakshi. The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the Tevaram. It is said that praying here is as good as praying at Kashi. The temple is described as the second most important Shiva temple in Madurai district.
The original complex is believed to have been built under the Pandyas. The present masonry structure was built under the Nayaks in the 16th century. The temple complex covers five acres and has two gateway towers, called gopurams. Inscriptions from Jatavarman Kulasekhara Pandyan in the 12th century, and from Krishna Deva Raya, are seen in the temple.
Carvings of Sambandar's episode decorate the stone steps that lead down to the Vaigai river.
