Devi Kali is worshipped at Haat Kalika Temple in her fierce form, shown conquering a demon. Tradition says Sankaracharya chose this site for installing a Mahakali shaktipith. The district site calls it a shakti temple set amid a cluster of pine trees.
The Governor of Uttarakhand offered prayers here on 7 June 2026. The Governor calls the temple a centre of faith and an important symbol of Kumaon's cultural and spiritual identity.
The temple is in Gangolihat, a town in Pithoragarh district. Gangolihat was once the main market and trading centre of the Gangoli region. Around the thirteenth century it came under the Mankoti kings, who had their capital at Mankot. In the sixteenth century the Chand king Balo Kalyan Chand invaded the Gangoli kingdom. The approach to the town once featured steep climbs from the Ramganga and Sarju valleys. Iron suspension bridges crossed those rivers. Remains of older temples and a masonry well with ancient inscriptions lie close to the temple, to the south-west.
