Why devotees come here
Hasanamba Temple in Hassan district, Karnataka, is dedicated to Shakti, worshipped as Amba, the mother. It opens for a day or up to 12 days a year, around Deepavali, so a darshan at that time is considered special.
Hasanamba is a form of Shakti, also called Amba, a name that means mother. Devotees believe she is the Shakti Swarupini, the form of Shakti that is worshipped here. Legend says the seven Matrikas came to Hassan from Varanasi and settled here, and three of them took their place in anthills inside the temple.
Another legend tells of a devotee whose mother-in-law struck her. Shakti turned the daughter-in-law into stone, and that stone stays within the temple grounds. A further tale says four robbers who tried to steal the temple's jewellery were turned to stone.
A local chieftain, Sanjeeva Krishnappa Nayaka, is believed to have built the temple in the 12th century, though the exact date is unknown. The town sits in south-western Karnataka along NH 75. The main tower was newly built in the Dravidian style. An ant-hill inside the premises still represents the presiding deity.
