Huligemma is the presiding deity of Huligi village, and devotees believe she is another form of Renuka Yellamma Devi. Legend says two devoted followers of Renuka Yellamma, Nagajogi and Basavajogi, made the trip to her shrine in Savadatti on every full moon. One night they had to cross the Tungabhadra in flood. An unknown force held their hands and brought them safely over.
Afterwards Huligemma told them she would make her home in Huligi. She is believed to have appeared there as a sacred stone, a Saligrama, and a Srichakra. A temple was built under the leadership of Nagajogi and Basavajogi after this event.
The temple sits on the banks of the Tungabhadra river and dates to the 13th century. It is counted among the popular temples of North Karnataka. The temple also provides free meals, known as Dasoha, to visiting devotees.
