Why devotees come here
Jagannath Temple in Digha is a replica of the Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha, built on the Bengal coast. Its tower rises 65 metres (213 ft) in the Kalingan style, and it was inaugurated on 30 April 2025.
The temple is a replica of the Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha. It is dedicated to Jagannath, a form of Vishnu, with his siblings Balarama and Subhadra, and to Devi Mahalaxmi. Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, along with Sudarshan, are to be worshipped as deities here. The design is meant as an exact copy of the 12th-century Puri temple.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the temple on 20 December 2018. The Digha-Shankarpur Development Authority gave 20 acres of land for it. Construction began in May 2022 under the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO). A yajna, a sacred fire ritual, started on 24 April 2025 as a pre-inauguration activity. Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the temple on 30 April 2025, on Akshaya Tritiya, between 3 pm and 3:15 pm. Servitors of the Puri temple opposed the inauguration and warned their members against taking part.
The tower is 65 metres (213 ft) tall and built of sandstone in the Kalingan style. The floor is marble brought from Vietnam. A later announcement said the word Dham would be dropped from the name of the complex.
