Why devotees come here
Jwalpa Devi Temple in Pauri Garhwal district is dedicated to Devi Jwalpa, a form of Parvati. It is also called a famous Siddha Peetha of Garhwal. It is also the family deity of the Thapliyal and Bisht clans.
The temple is dedicated to Devi Jwalpa, a form of Parvati. According to the Skandpurana, Shachi, daughter of the Daitya king Pulom, performed penance here to win Indra as her husband. Every year thousands visit, especially unmarried girls, who pray for a husband like the one Shachi received.
Legend also says Adi Shankaracharya prayed at this temple, and Devi appeared to him. The district government page calls the temple a famous Shaktipeeth of the area, dedicated to Devi Durga. Another account calls it a famous Siddha Peetha of Garhwal, dedicated to Devi Jwalpa.
The present temple was built by the late Pandit Shri Duttaram Anthwal. The Anthwal family are its traditional priests and caretakers. Until the last century a big fair called Athwaad was held regularly, but it became irregular after the Gorkhyani period and then stopped.
