Why devotees come here
Kola Valvill Ramar Temple in Tiruvelliyangudi, Tamil Nadu, is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu. Vishnu is worshipped here as Kola Valvill Ramar, with his consort Maragathavalli. The temple is 19 km from Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, and legends link it to the four yugas.
The presiding deity, Kola Valvill Ramar, is shown reclining. His consort Lakshmi is worshipped here as Maragathavalli. The temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu.
An old tale says this shrine was known by four different names over the ages of the world. The names follow the four yugas, from Satya Yuga to Kali Yuga. The names run in order: first Brahma Putram, then Parasaram, then Sainthiranagaram, and finally Bhargavapuram in the Kali Yuga. Legend also says Kola Valvill Ramar appeared to the sage Markendeya. In another story, the demon guru Sukrachariyar opposed King Mahabali giving land to Vishnu, who had come as a Brahmin. Sage Parasara is believed to have worshipped the presiding deity here.
The temple is built in the Dravidian style of architecture. A granite wall surrounds it, enclosing all the shrines and two water bodies. The central shrine of the presiding deity is built of granite, while the other shrines are of brick.
