Why devotees come here
Kuravpur Dattatreya Temple sits on an island in the river Krishna, in Raichur district, Karnataka. It is built for Sripada Srivallabha, the first incarnation of Dattatreya in Kaliyuga. Small boats are the only way across to reach it.
Sripada Srivallabha, the first incarnation of Dattatreya in Kaliyuga, is honoured at this temple on an island in the Krishna. Devotees call the island his karma-bhoomi, the place where he did his work. The island lies on the border of Karnataka and Telangana, in the middle of the river. Legend says a small cave near the temple holds the padukas, or footwear, of Sripadavallabha. An old banyan tree stands outside the temple.
The island is described as his workplace and tapobhoomi, a place of penance. Kuruvapuram is counted among three key places where Dattatreya is said to have meditated for 12 years. The idol of Dattatreya is housed in the spot where Sripadavallabha is said to have meditated.Visitors are asked to sit in meditation while the sanctum doors stay closed for rituals. Special poojas are performed on auspicious days and on Karthika Pournami every year.
