The Lakshmi Narayan temples complex in Chamba is devoted to the Vaishnavite sect. It includes the main Lakshmi Narayan temple, and the temple is dedicated to Vishnu. A metal image of Garuda, Vishnu's mount, is installed on the dwajastamba pillar at the main gate. The town of Chamba lies at the junction of the Ravi river and its tributary, the Sal river, with Shah Madar hill forming the backdrop on its eastern side.
Raja Sahil Verman built the main temple in the 10th century. It was built to suit the local climate, with wooden chatries, and it has a shikara, a sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha), an antarala and a mantapa.
Aurangzeb is said to have ordered the temples of Chamba pulled down. In 1678 Raja Chhatra Singh, who ruled from 1664 to 1694, answered that order by putting gold-plated pinnacles on the roof of this temple.
