Why devotees come here
Maha Mrityunjay Temple in Puranigudam, Nagaon district, Assam, is a Shiva temple whose 126-foot lingam is described as the world's tallest. The temple is built in the form of a Shivalinga and opened to devotees in February 2021. It is in Nagaon district, which lies about 120 km east of Guwahati.
Local belief links this site to Guru Shukracharya, the guru of the Daityas or Asuras, who is said to have performed the Mahamrityunjaya mantra here. Acharya Bhrigu Giri Maharaj used to meditate here, and he began construction in 2003.
The Pran Pratishta puja ran from 22 to 25 February 2021, and the temple opened to devotees from 26 February 2021. Before the final work, earlier attempts were made by others. Er. Narayan Sharma carried out the final engineering and design work.
The temple is built in the form of a Shivalinga. Its centrepiece is a Shivalinga 126 feet tall, which a news report calls the largest Shiva lingam in the world. The complex was newly constructed and opened in 2021.
