Why devotees come here
Mahavir Mandir in Patna is a Hindu temple dedicated to Hanuman, one of the leading temples for his worship. Millions of pilgrims visit every year, and huge crowds come on festivals like Rama Navami and New Year. The idol inside is Sankat-Mochan, an avatar of Hanuman.
Devotees come to the temple to honour Hanuman through the idol of Sankat-Mochan, which is housed inside. Millions of pilgrims visit the temple every year. Thousands visit during every Rama Navami and New Year celebration. On Rama Navami, the queues can exceed one kilometer in length. On New Year's day, devotees with garlands line up to enter the temple and make offerings.
Swami Balanand, an ascetic of the Ramanandi sect, first set up the temple around 1730 CE. The temple gained popularity in 1947, after a large number of Hindu refugees came to Patna following the partition of India.
The temple was later rebuilt in concrete. That concrete structure was demolished in 1987 to make way for a large marble temple.
