Why devotees come here
Mailam Murugan Temple stands on a hill in Mailam village, Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu. Murugan is worshipped here in wedding form, with Valli and Deivanai beside him. Tamil New Year is its most special festival, and the temple lies near Puducherry.
The temple's legend begins with the end of the cruel rule of Surapadman. The temple's own history starts with this legend. The Puranas, the old Hindu texts, say Murugan was moved by Surapadman's tearful plea. He told him to meditate by the Varaha river near the hill until he took the form of a peacock.
The temple on the hilltop was built by the head of the Pommayapuram mutt, a monastery. The shrine sits on a hill in the village of Mailam, in Villupuram district.
Murugan is shown facing east, in wedding form, with Valli and Deivanai. Tamil New Year is the temple's most special festival. Special worship is also held on many festival days, including Thai Poosam and Karthigai Deepam.
