Why devotees come here
Pandava Thoothar Perumal Temple stands in Periya Kanchipuram, a central locality of Kanchipuram town in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu temples praised by the Alvar saints. Its main image shows Krishna with two arms, because he appeared in human form here.
The temple is dedicated to Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu, who is worshipped here as Pandava Tutar Perumal with his consort Lakshmi, also called Rukmini. Legend says Krishna went to the Kauravas as an envoy of the Pandavas. Duryodhana is said to have dug a deep pit and covered it with a carpet and a gem-studded chair to trap him. Krishna showed his cosmic form to the Kaurava courtiers.
The temple is believed to have been built by the Pallavas in the late 8th century, with later work by the Medieval Cholas and the Vijayanagara kings. It is counted among the three oldest temples in Kanchipuram. Three inscriptions on its walls date from the time of Kulothunga Chola I and Rajadhiraja Chola.
The temple has a four-tiered rajagopuram and a single precinct enclosed in walls.
