Why devotees come here
Parshuram Kund is a holy site on the lower Lohit River, in Lohit district, Arunachal Pradesh. The district calls it a shrine of all-India importance, dedicated to the sage Parashurama. Pilgrims come for the holy dip during the Makar Sankranti mela in January.
Parshuram Kund lies on the lower reaches of the Lohit River, in Lohit district. The district calls it a famous holy place, set in dense forest. The site is dedicated to the sage Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu. Pilgrims come from Nepal and from across India, and common visitors come for sightseeing too.
Legend says Parashurama's axe stuck to his hand after he beheaded his mother, Renuka, on his father's orders. The axe came free when he washed his hands in the river. Pilgrims take the holy dip in the Lohit during the Makar Sankranti mela.
The original kund was covered after the 1950 Assam earthquake. A new kund formed in the riverbed of the Lohit River. The lower Lohit district has ruins of ancient shrines, and the site is mentioned in Puranic and tantric texts. A dashavatar temple here shows all ten avatars of Vishnu.
