Why devotees come here
Patteeswaram is a village 8 km from Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. The Dhenupureeswarar Temple here is a temple of Shiva and one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the 7th century Tevaram hymns.
Patteeswaram is a village in Thanjavur district, in the suburbs of Kumbakonam city. Kumbakonam is the headquarters of the Kumbakonam taluk, 40 km from Thanjavur and 282 km from Chennai. The village takes its name from Patti, also called Nandini, a calf of Kamadhenu, the sacred cow of Hindu lore. The temple is linked to a legend about the saint Sambandar. Legend says Nandi moved so that Sambandar could have a direct view of the presiding deity.
The temple is revered in the Tevaram, a 7th century collection of Tamil Saiva hymns written by the Nayanar saint poets. It is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam, one of the shrines praised in those hymns. Many kings built temples in the village in different periods, so it has long been an important place in history.
The Muthupandal festival shows the mix of traditions here. Sambandar visits the Kothandaramaswamy Temple, a second temple in the same village, and receives a silk shawl from it. The exchange shows the diversity of Shaivism and Vaishnavism in this village.
