Why devotees come here
Ramdevra is a village about 12 km north of Pokhran in Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan. The temple honours Baba Ramdevji, a saint and folk deity, at the place where he took samadhi, his resting place.
Baba Ramdevji is honoured across India as a saint and folk deity, and he is beloved by millions across the country. In Rajasthan, the Meghwal community and many other social groups regard him as their chosen deity, or ishta devata. Regional legend says the childless King Ajmal travelled to Dwarka to pray for an heir.
The saint took samadhi at Ramdevra at the age of 33, and the samadhi, or resting place, is the centre of the shrine. In 1931, Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner built a temple around that samadhi.
The temple complex is built of intricately carved marble and sandstone, a sign of Rajasthani craftsmanship. The heart of the temple is the sanctum, and the sanctum holds the idol of Baba Ramdevji, seated. The complex also houses the samadhis of his disciples and the tombs of five Muslim Pirs said to have come from Mecca.
