Why devotees come here
Renukamba Temple stands in Chandragutti village, Shivamogga district, Karnataka. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Renuka, and it is an ancient cave shrine. The place is known for the legend of Renuka and her son Parashurama.
Legend says Renuka was born from the fire of a yajna that a king of Chandragutti performed, and that he was blessed with her as a daughter. She later married the sage Jamadagni. It is said she carried water in pots made of sand and never spilled a drop, using snakes as pads under the pots. Their son Parashurama took his mother to the cave and cut her head. When Jamadagni offered his son a boon, Parashurama asked for his mother's life back, and she was restored. The divine incident is believed to have taken place in Chandragutti.
The place was earlier known as Chandragupta Pura, Chandragutti pete and Gutti pete. The village lies between Soraba taluka and Siddapura, about 16 km from Soraba taluka, on a rocky mountain bed at 848 metres above sea level. Sirsi and Siddapura towns are about 19 km away.
The shrine is an ancient cave temple, set inside the cave itself. Chandragutti is a historical place and a pilgrimage centre of Renukamba, and devotees come here to honour her.
