Sajjangad is a hill fort in the Sahyadri range. It is the final resting place of Samarth Ramdas Swami and a popular place of pilgrimage. The Shri Ramdas Swami Sansthan trust looks after the fort and the samadhi.
The Bahamani rulers built the fort between 1347 and 1527. It was earlier known as Parali, and it was then renamed Sajjangad. Shivaji Maharaj captured it from Adilshah on 2 April 1673. It stayed in Maratha hands until the British ended the Maratha Empire in 1818.
At its entrance stands the Shivaji Mahadarwaja, a grand gateway that symbolizes Maratha strength and resilience. Visitors can drive up to the designated parking area near the fort. From there, the climb is a moderate trek of about 230 steps.
