Why devotees come here
Arulmigu Sri Mariamman Temple in Samayapuram is an ancient Hindu temple in Tiruchirappalli district, Tamil Nadu. Its main deity is Samayapuram Mariamman, a form of Adi Parashakti. The temple is ranked the second wealthiest in Tamil Nadu by cash flow, after Palani.
Samayapuram is a significant symbol of the native culture of rural Tamil Nadu, and its Mariamman temples keep a number of unique practices. Legend says the deity was first at the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam. One of the chief priests there believed the idol caused illness to Ranganathar, so he asked for it to be removed from that temple.
The early history of the temple is unclear. In the early 18th century, King Vijayaraya Chakravarti II built the present form of the temple. It is believed that Vijayanagara rulers promised to build a temple if they won a war. After their success, they built a shrine for Mariamman.
Unlike many traditional stone idols, the main deity is made of sand and clay, mixed with extracts of medicinal herbs. Devotees worship it as Samayapuram Mariamman, a form of Adi Parashakti.
