Why devotees come here
Shri Lete hue Hanumanji Temple is in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, about 1 km from the Triveni Sangam. It is known for a reclining Hanuman idol, about 20 feet long, which is partly submerged in the monsoon. The temple is believed to be at least 600 to 700 years old.
Legend says Hanuman lay down here to rest on the Sangam bank. He was returning after his victory over Lanka and felt tired on the way. At the wish of Sita Mata, he lay down on the banks of the Sangam, and a temple was built on that spot. Legend also links the idol to a childless businessman from Kannauj, who is said to have commissioned it from stones found in the Vindhyachal hills.
Baba Balagiri Ji Maharaj found the idol while he was preparing a dhuni, a sacred site for worship, and installed it at its current spot. Akbar later built the wall of his fort behind the temple and dedicated the land to Hanuman.
The main idol is a reclining Hanuman about 20 feet long, said to be the only one of its kind in the world. Its right hand holds images of Rama and Lakshmana, and its left holds Garuda. During the monsoon, rising water levels partly submerge it. The idol is believed to lie at least 6 feet below the surface. Locals also call it Bade Hanuman, Fort Hanuman, Late Hanuman and Dam Hanuman.
