The Tambdi, or Red, Jogeshwari is considered one of the guardian deities of Pune. Her temple is old and sits in the middle of the city, in Budhwar Peth. The Jogeshwari temple is named among the historical landmarks of this neighbourhood from the Peshwa era, along with Tulshibaug and Belbaugh.
Budhwar Peth was a Mughal-era settlement called Mohitabad. Peshwa Madhavrao I, who ruled from 1761 to 1773, renamed it Budhwar Peth. Pune has at least 250 temples that date back to the 18th century. Ganesh Chaturthi has been celebrated publicly in Pune since the era of King Shivaji. The Peshwas started a public Ganesh festival in their capital during the month of Bhadrapad. Jogeshwari Ganpati is one of its most important mandals.
Today the area is a commercial locality, known for electrical goods, books and traditional items. The temple is listed among its places of interest, along with Laxmi Road, the main shopping area of inner Pune.
