Why devotees come here
Thiruvambady Sri Krishna Temple is one of the largest Sree Krishna temples in Kerala. It stands on Shoranur Road in Thrissur city. Its deities are among the main participants in Thrissur Pooram, the city's festival.
Thrissur has many well-known temples, including Vadakkumnathan, Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple and Paramekkavu Bagavathi temple. Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu are the two temples whose deities take the main part in the 36-hour Thrissur Pooram. Each side brings its own elephants, music and fireworks to the festival.
Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Cochin who ruled from 1790 to 1805, was the brainchild of Thrissur Pooram. He divided the participating temples into a Paramekkavu side and a Thiruvambady side. During Kudamattam, fifteen caparisoned elephants from Thiruvambady stand face to face with fifteen from Paramekkavu.
On the Madathil varavu, Thiruvambady arrives at Vadakkumnathan from Brahmaswam Madham with a panchavadhyam concert. The Devaswom's melam at Sree Moolasthanam is named among the best platforms for Pandimelam. The Madathil varavu is known for the best panchavadyam played in the State. The Devaswom's fireworks come in innovative patterns and varieties.
