Why devotees come here
Thrichittatt Maha Vishnu Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, in Chengannur, Alappuzha district, Kerala. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu temples praised in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham. Legend links its early history to the Pandavas.
Legend says the Pandavas each installed a Krishna image on the banks of the Pamba when they arrived there. Yudhishthira later renovated the temple and installed a Vishnu idol with a guardian image of Krishna.
Stone inscriptions in the temple date it to the Second Chera Empire, from 800 to 1102 CE. No historical records show when it was built. The central shrine, called the Sreekovil, stands on an elevated platform with a single door. The presiding idol is 4 ft (1.2 m) tall. It faces east, stands with four arms, and holds a conch in the upper right hand and a discus in the upper left. The temple has no gateway tower, only an arch from the main road.
The annual festival closes with a procession from this temple to Gosala Krishna Temple, so the two temples are linked each year. Since 1957, the festival of Gosala Krishna Temple at Thiruvanvandoor has begun here, when 25 decorated elephants are paraded to Thiruvanvandoor.
