Vishwanath Temple stands in Guptkashi, a town in the Garhwal Himalayas. The main shrine is dedicated to Shiva as Vishwanath, the ruler of the world. The district site says Guptkashi has importance much like Kashi. A legend says the linga was moved here for safe keeping after the temple at Kashi was demolished. The district page tells a different legend: Shiva left Guptkashi for Kedarnath because he did not want to meet the Pandavas.
The architecture is akin to other Uttarakhand temples, such as Kedarnath. The temple is built of stone with a high tower over the sanctum. To the left of the main shrine is a smaller shrine to Ardhanareeshvara. In front of the temple, the Manikarnika Kund pond holds a Shiva linga that two springs bathe.
Shivaratri honours Shiva. The Shiva temples of Rudraprayag district are decorated for it.
