Why devotees come here
Anantha Padmanabha Temple stands in the forested Ananthagiri hills of Vikarabad district, Telangana, about 75 km from Hyderabad. It is dedicated to Vishnu as Anantha Padmanabha Swamy, and the hills are linked to the source of the Musi river.
Anantha Padmanabha Swamy, a form of Vishnu, is worshipped on the Ananthagiri hills, a forested hill area in Vikarabad district. The hills are linked to the source of the Musi river, which is also called the Muchkunda river. Legend says sage Markandeya installed the temple while he did yoga sadhana on the hill, as the Skanda Purana describes it. Another legend says Rajarshi Muchukunda came to Ananthagiri to take rest after years of fighting rakshasas and the mleccha Kalayavana.
Local tradition says a Nizam came to the hills to hunt. The deity appeared to him in a dream and asked him to build a temple for him. Later, the 7th Nizam, Mir Osman Ali, gave a cash grant for repairs of the temple. The temple stands in a forested hill area.
