Why devotees come here
Anjanadri Hill Temple stands on a hill near Anegundi, across the Tungabhadra River from Hampi, in Koppal district. Devotees believe the hill is the birthplace of Hanuman. A rock-carved idol of Hanuman is in the temple at the top.
Legend says Hanuman was born to Anjana on this hill. The hill is known as Anjana's Hill, or Anjanadri. According to the Ramayana, Hanuman is also called Anjaneya after his mother. Devotees visit the hill as his birthplace, and it is counted among the places linked with the Ramayana.
In the Puranas the place is known as Kishkinda. The nearby village of Anegundi was once called Kishkindha, and it lies in Gangavathi taluk of Koppal district. The Hampi ruins are close by, across the Tungabhadra River. The Stone Chariot at Hampi's Vittala Temple is a masterpiece of Vijayanagara architecture. The hill itself is located in Gangavathi taluk.
The temple at the top has a rock-carved idol of Hanuman. Pilgrims reach it by climbing the hill, and from the top you can see the Hampi ruins and the hills around them.
