Why devotees come here
Bade Hanuman Mandir stands near the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. It is known for its reclining idol of Hanuman, which is said to be the only one of its kind in the world.
The temple draws millions of devotees each year, especially during the Kumbh Mela, and thousands come on Tuesdays and on auspicious days. Its main attraction is the reclining idol of Hanuman. Hanuman Jayanti, Ram Navami and Narak Chaturdashi are the major festivals celebrated here. The legend says a childless businessman from Kannauj had the idol made from stones found in the Vindhyachal hills.
The temple's origins are said to be about 700 years old. The story goes that Akbar built the wall of his fort behind the temple and dedicated the land to Hanuman. Today a new corridor is being built near the temple. Work began with a bhoomi pujan on a Tuesday, and the corridor will have 10 gates and a modern kitchen for the main prasad.
In the monsoon, rising river water partly submerges the idol. In floods, the water can reach the entrance and stay over the idol until it recedes.
