Why devotees come here
BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Bhuj, built in 1822, is one of six original temples built while Swaminarayan was alive. Bhuj is the headquarters of Kutch, the largest district in India.
According to legend, the devotees of Bhuj asked Swaminarayan to build a temple in their town. The temple is dedicated to Nar Narayan Dev, and Swaminarayan himself installed the murti on Friday, 15 May 1823.
Vaishnavanand Swami and the saints with him came to Bhuj in 1822 and built the temple abode within about one year. The 26 January 2001 earthquake destroyed much of Bhuj, including this temple. Reconstruction began in 2003 and took seven years to complete. Plans for a new temple a short distance from the old site have been reported.
The temple has one central dome, 25 minor domes and 258 pillars, all carved from Makrana and Ambaji marble. The builders carried out the plans with minute detail.
