Why devotees come here
Batadrava Than is the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardeva, the great Vaishnavite saint of Assam, and lies about 18 km north-west of Nagaon town. The Kirtan Ghar, the prayer hall Sankardeva founded, stands in the middle of the premises. The redeveloped site was inaugurated in December 2025.
Sankardeva, the great Vaishnavite saint of Assam, is honoured here as the founder of the first Kirtan Ghar in the fifteenth century. The Kirtan Ghar was founded to practise and preach the neo-Vaishnavite faith. The Than is also the first Namghar or Than he built.
Sankardeva set up a prayer house and huts where daily prayer and discussion could be held. Later he left the place after disturbances. The Than was then split into the Narowa and Salaguri Satras after a long dispute over ownership. The two were reunited in 1958 under the name Batadrava Than, with one large Namghar.
The present Kirtan Ghar, in the middle of the premises, was built in 1958 and measures 180 ft by 85 ft. The Than covers 16 bigha inside a brick wall and has two entrances. Other buildings on the campus include the Natghar, Alohighar, Sabhaghar, Rabhaghar, Doul mandir, the Hatipukhuri pond and the Aakashi Ganga. The redeveloped site was inaugurated on 29 December 2025 by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
