Why devotees come here
Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple stands in Thirukkannamangai village, in Thiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu. It is counted among the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu temples praised by the Alvar saints.
Vishnu is worshipped here as Bhaktavatsala Perumal, and his consort Lakshmi as Kannamangai Nayagi. The Padma Purana, one of the 18 sacred scriptures of Hinduism, mentions Thirukkannamangai. The Alvar saints praised the temple in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham. Legend says Varuna, the guardian of the west, and the sage Romasa worshipped Vishnu at this place. Another legend says Lakshmi came here to perform penance, seeking Vishnu's hand in marriage.
The temple is believed to have been started by the Medieval Cholas in the late 9th century, with later contributions from the Thanjavur Nayaks. Three inscriptions from the Chola period are in the temple. The five-tiered gateway tower is 90 feet (27 metres) tall, and the shrines are enclosed within a granite wall.
Thiruvarur district is one of the 38 districts of Tamil Nadu. The temple stands in Thirukkannamangai village within it, and its complex is enclosed by rectangular walls.
