Koneswarar Temple is a Shiva temple. Its principal deity is Koneswarar, a form of Shiva, along with Devi Periyanayagi. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the Shiva shrines praised in the Tevaram poems by the saint Tirugnanasambandar. The saints Sambandar and Arunagirinathar have also sung its praises. Kudavasal was a prominent settlement during medieval times, and the town has multiple Shaivite temples.
The image of Shiva here is in the form of a lingam. The temple is a maadakkovil, a temple built at an elevation. Legend says Garuda worshipped Shiva here, and the scar on the lingam is believed to have been caused by Garuda. Another legend says the mouth of the pot of nectar from the deluge fell where the temple now stands.
The Chola king Ko Chenkann Cholan built the temple on an elevated platform, and it is counted among the seventy temples built by him. Today it has an 80 feet tall Rajagopuram and two prakarams, the enclosure courtyards. Shrines to Murugan, Idumban, Shiva, Sundarar, Saraswati, Surya and Chandra stand within the temple. The temple lies in the Cauvery delta region of Tiruvarur district.
