Chandi Devi Temple is one of three Siddha Peethas in Haridwar, the others being Mansa Devi and Maya Devi. A Siddha Peetha is a place of worship where desires get fulfilled. Legend says Chandika Devi defeated Chand Munda, the chief of the demon army, on Neel Parvat, and then Shumbh and Nishumbh. The temple sits in the Shivalik Hills, on the peak of Neel Parvat. Pilgrims reach the peak by ropeway in a few minutes or by a three-kilometre trek from Chandighat.
The present structure was built in 1929 by Suchat Singh, king of Kashmir. The main statue is believed to have been installed by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
Devotees throng the temple during Chandi Chaudas, Navratri and the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar. It is a very famous temple in Haridwar.
