Why devotees come here
Dauji Temple stands in Baldeo, a town on the outskirts of Mathura city in Uttar Pradesh. It is dedicated to Balaram, the elder brother of Krishna, and the stone statue shows him with his wife Revati.
Dauji Temple is dedicated to Balaram, whom devotees call Dauji Maharaj. The temple holds a stone statue of him with his wife Revati, and devotees come to worship both. The temple stands on the banks of the Yamuna river, at the eastern end of the Mathura yatra route. Local belief holds that the image was first found in a tank called Balabhadra Kund.
Legend says the idol was installed by Vajranabha, the grandson of Krishna. Later, in the time of the Arabic Sultans, the temple was destroyed and the idol was lost. In the Mughal era, about 480 years ago, Goswami Gokulnathji re-installed the deity. He was a grandson of the saint Vallabhacharya.
Sources differ on the age of the temple, with one date near 1535 AD and another near 1580 AD. Baldeo is a town and nagar panchayat in Mathura district. Each year in December, a mela is held on Margshish Purnima to mark the temple's establishment. Holi is celebrated here as Huranga, and people come from outside India to attend.
