Why devotees come here
Devi Patan Temple stands on the west side of Tulsipur town in Balrampur district, Uttar Pradesh. It is dedicated to Ma Pateshwari and is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Ma Durga. Its sacred pond, Surya Kund, is part of the temple complex.
Ma Pateshwari is the presiding deity here, and the temple is also called Devi Patan. It is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India, the sacred sites of Ma Durga. Legend says the right shoulder of Mata Sati, called pat in Hindi, fell at this spot after Vishnu's chakra divided her body. That is why the place is a Shakti Peetha.
The temple complex has a sacred pond called Surya Kund. It is believed that Karna, a hero of the Mahabharata, built it in memory of his father, the sun deity.
The temple is of great religious importance. People come here for a child's first head-shaving, called Mundan. Others come to donate hair if the Mundan was done somewhere else. There is a lot of rush during the Navratra period.
