Why devotees come here
Dhopap Temple stands on the right bank of the Gomti river at Lambhua, in Sultanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. Devotees bathe at Dhopap Ghat, where the legend says Shri Rama washed away the sin of killing Ravan. A large Ram temple stands at the ghat.
Pilgrims come to Dhopap to bathe in the Gomti. The Vishnu Purana is said to call the river in this stretch Dhutopapa, and the water reaches Dhopap from the east. The legend says Shri Rama sought absolution here for killing Ravan, who was of Brahmin caste, and bathed in the river on his return from Sri Lanka.
A ghat on the Gomti now bears the name Dhopap Ghat. People follow Rama's example and wash away their sins in the river here. Lambhua is a town, tehsil and Nagar panchayat in Sultanpur district, and the temple lies on the right bank of the Gomti beside the Sultanpur-Jaunpur road.
A large Ram temple stands at the ghat, and many devotees visit it. The ghat hosts a bathing fair on Ganga Dushehra and on Chaitra Ramnavami.
