Gauri Shankar Temple is listed among the historical sites of Old Delhi, also called Shahjahanabad. It stands in Chandni Chowk. One legend says a Maratha general, Appa Gangadhar, built the temple. This is one of the legends about the temple, not settled history.
Sawan is the month dedicated to Shiva, and believers observe fasts and worship him during it. Devotees throng the temple on the first day of Sawan. On the last Monday of Sawan, devotees offered prayers here. The Chandni Chowk metro station on the Yellow Line serves the region.
Delhi Junction, the oldest railway station in the area, is connected to the Chandni Chowk metro station by an underground tunnel. The tunnel is meant to make transfers between train and metro easier. A multi-level parking lot in Chandni Chowk is already used by at least 1,000 vehicles, although it has yet to be inaugurated.
