Why devotees come here
Hanuman Garhi is a Hindu temple complex dedicated to Hanuman on a hilltop in the hill station of Nainital. It was built by the local saint Neem Karoli Baba in 1950. The hill is also known for its views of the setting sun.
The presiding deity is Hanuman, shown tearing open his chest to reveal Rama and Sita in his heart. The complex also has temples to Ram and Shiva. It stands at an altitude of 1,951 m, on a hilltop.
The local saint Neem Karoli Baba built the temple in 1950, more than a decade before his better-known Kainchi Dham ashram. The site is said to have been a graveyard for children that local people avoided. He first visited it in 1950, and with devotees he set up a hut and a small Hanuman idol there.
A large Hanuman statue was established in 1953, and the Shiv temple came up in 1957. On the other side of the hill there is a Shitala Devi temple and the ashram of Lila Sah Bapu.
