The Hateshwari Mata Temple stands at Hatkoti, a village on the right bank of the Pabbar river, about 100 km from Shimla. The stone temple complex here is dedicated to Devi Durga in her warrior form, built with local materials in a style typical of the valley. Two mountain streams, the Bishkulti and the Raanvati, join the Pabbar at Hatkoti.
The temples at Hatkoti date from the eighth and ninth centuries CE, in the Gurjara-Pratihara period. The complex includes an early medieval nagara temple on the northern side of the main temple. A Mahishasurmardini sculpture at Hatkoti is dated to the 10th century CE.
The village lies in green paddy fields and almond orchards. National Highways 707 and 705 connect it to Himachal and the rest of India, and buses on the Shimla to Rohru route stop here.
