Why devotees come here
Jalantheeswarar Temple stands at Thakkolam, a panchayat town in Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu. Shiva is worshipped here in the form of the lingam, and the temple is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam shrines praised in the Tevaram.
The Tevaram is a 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical work written by the Nayanar saint poets. It praises the presiding deity of this temple, and the temple is classed as one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam shrines. Legend says Kamdhenu, the divine cow, worshipped Shiva here. It is also believed that Yama, the deity of death, the seven divine mothers called Saptamartrikas, and the sages Uthadi and Theerkatha worshipped Shiva at this spot.
The original complex is believed to have been built by the Pallavas, and the Cholas later expanded it. The present masonry was built in the 16th century under the Nayaks. Four inscriptions from the 10th and 11th centuries identify temple women who served here. The Cholas and the Rashtrakutas fought the Takkolam War, which is called the greatest war in the Tamil region.
The temple has a three-tiered gateway tower, and all its shrines sit inside concentric rectangular granite walls. The central shrine houses the lingam of Jalantheeswarar. The temple also has an image of Thyagaraja, classified as Pre-Rajasimha style of the Pallavas.
