Why devotees come here
Janaki Mandir stands at the heart of Janakpur in Nepal's Madhes region. It is the most important of the town's more than 70 Hindu temples, and the white stone and marble shrine honours Sita.
Janaki Mandir is the most important of the more than 70 Hindu temples in Janakpur. Devotees come to see a revered image of Sita in the main sanctum, and the temple draws thousands of them each year. Local tradition regards the Vivah Mandap beside the main shrine as the sacred site of the wedding of Rama and Sita.
Queen Vrisha Bhanu of Orchha State built the temple in 1910 AD. The temple is a fine example of classical Hindu architecture. It is a three-storey structure made of stone and marble, and it blends Koiri-Hindu, Mughal and Rajput styles. Its 60 rooms have coloured glass, engravings, paintings, lattice windows and turrets.
Janakpur has more than 70 Hindu temples, and the popular ponds Ganga Sagar and Dhanush Sagar lie near the town. Janaki Mandir is the principal site of Vivah Panchami, the annual festival that commemorates the wedding. The festival falls in November or December by the Hindu calendar.
